If you are working on a new application or website, you will spend most of your time typing and compiling code. Geany can make your work faster and easier, due to its smart capabilities. It supports a wide variety of programming languages and it provides numerous features, including syntax highlighting, code folding, auto-completion of words and symbols and much more.

Geany is built as an independent Integrated Development Environment (IDE). This means that you don't need certain Desktop Environments, like KDE or GNOME, but you still need the GTK 2.16 libraries or a later version. The application can be used on any Windows and Linux platform and it should not take more than a few seconds to install it.

The user interface looks and feels like any other text editor, but it comes with a number of useful functions. For example, you can work on several documents in parallel, on separate tabs, or open saved files right away, by selecting them from a list, on the left side of the window. Additionally, you can view an events log, the code compiler's status and messages, in the lower region of the interface, where you can also type your personal notes or ideas.

Besides the usual options, for creating and saving new documents or opening existing ones, you can also find options for compiling and executing your code or building commands. If you wish to specify a certain color, you can use the application's color chooser to insert the corresponding code instantly.

The software does not limit you to easier color selections. It comes with many smart features, "under its hood". You may create HTML, PHP and other types of files separately. The software will highlight your syntaxes, depending on what kind of file you are working on. Besides auto-completing words and symbols, it can also close HTML and XML tags automatically.

Pros

The application supports numerous languages. It provides a good number of useful features, such as syntax highlighting auto-completion of symbols and words, auto-closing for HTML and XML tags and more. Besides that, the software is independent from Desktop Environments, like KDE or GNOME.

Cons

There are no clear disadvantages to mention. If writing code is part of your daily routine, Geany will make your work much faster and easier.
